Creepy Book

If you're looking for a book that will stretch your mind and maybe creep you out a little, check out 'Descent Into Hell' by Charles Williams It's rather wordy and at times confusing (OK, VERY confusing), but somehow it's been keeping me intrigued. Charles Williams was a contemporary of  C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkein, so  this is what I call an "intellectual" novel. Makes me feel smarter just for reading it. :) Very well written; good mental excercise.

Currently Watching
Pride & Prejudice (Widescreen Edition)

Yesterday afternoon my sisters Katie (new driver's license possesser, woo-hoo!) and Beth came over to watch my new "Pride and Prejudice" DVD. What a fun movie...I always leave those kinds of movies feeling so enlightened, wanting to live in the English countryside and with a vocabulary that has expanded to use phrases like "I am filled with incandescent happiness" and "I daresay...". ~sigh~. Katie liked it; Beth seemed to share Mark's opinion of the movie (something about "it's boring", "nothing ever really happens in it", "I could have fallen asleep for half of it and not missed a thing", yadda yadda yadda...). Whatever.
Regardless, it was a jolly good afternoon with my sweet sisters. Hopefully we'll do it again soon (next time with a movie Beth likes, perhaps? :))

Shallow TV

I admit it: on mornings off (which is every Tuesday morning), I have developed the habit of watching the TLC lineup (TLC=The Learning Channel). The first part of the morning starts off OK with shows like 'A Wedding Story", "A Baby Story", etc. Then 2 shows come on the air which both intrigue and disturb me: "What Not To Wear" and "10 Years Younger". Both of these shows focus on one average person, how horrible they look, how ridiculous they are for dressing the way they do, and how they need to be changed in order to be a functioning member of society. Sometimes it's fine, as in the yesterday's episode of "What Not to Wear", where it focused on a single woman who was 26, extremely petite, dressed in kids clothes, carried a lunchbox to work, was trying to make it in the business world, and kept getting mistaken for a kid. She volunteered herself for the show, & got some help picking out clothes that fit her & made her look older. Good, great, fine. I'm cool with that. Usually, however, these shows are extreemly shallow, bordering on just plain mean! The worst show of them all, in my opinion, is 10 years younger. Here's how the show works:

1). Participant gets put in clear, plastic soundproof booth on the street.
2). Passers by are stopped and asked "How old do you think this person looks?". The passersby then proceed to analyze every aspect of the participant's physical appearance, clearly revealing their own insecurity issues .
3). Participant then gets interviewed by the empathetic and understanding host, Marc, who reveals the average age guessed by the 100 people surveyed (typically much older than the person is), asks him/her (with misty eyes) how they possibly let themselves get this far, and then dramatically asks (even more misty-eyed) "How old are you REALLY?"
4). The person then gets a dramatic makeover, because they looked horrible before, and omigosh they should be so embarrassed for ever appearing in public that way, & this disgrace must be stopped for the love of all that is good in this world (OK, I added that part, but it's implied)
5). The "new them" is revealed, they go back in the soundproof booth, 100 more people surveyed, a new & improved "average age" guess is revealed (typically dramatically younger than the first one), the dramatic music swells as the person tears up and gives Marc a hug in slow motion, and the show ends.

What a shallow show!! Today's episode was extra funny, because the guy was 54, and the average age guessed was (heaven forbid) 57! Oh my gosh! He should be ashamed of himself!!!

Now I'm just ranting. These shows still aren't as bad as that "How Hot Are You" show that was on a couple years ago, but they're starting to borderline. The focus on physical appearance in this cutlure is growing insane.

I'm done ranting.
